Stop and Smell the Roses

Welcome to Five Minute Friday a spontaneous writing break hosted by Lisa-Jo. This week's word prompt is Present.

We tend to fall into one of three categories: those who live in the past, the present or the future. It's just how we're wired, no one way is better than another - or is it?

I dwell in the future. The advantage of a being a future dweller is that I Have A Plan. Not only a Plan A but a Plan B, and often a Plan C. Planning is good. Many pitfalls are avoided by thinking ahead, examining possibilities and probabilities, and then choosing a direction.

The downfall of a future dweller is an inability to live in the present, to enjoy this moment in time, to savor what is happening now, to rest in what is - not what may come in the future.

For God all time is now. All time is the present - past, present, and future. My struggle is to learn to enjoy what is now, not to fret about what might happen tomorrow or next week. If God exists in the present, then that is a good place to be.

  3. I worry a lot so it's hard for me to stay in the present. And also any time I try to plan ahead for something (usually financial), it doesn't end up working out.

    1. I know the feeling Jojo. I'm a worrier too, and yes, things don't usually work out the way I hope either. I just keep reminding myself that God's plan is way better than any plan I concoct.

  4. I wear myself out thinking about what was, or what could have been. Thank you for the reminder that God is in the present and that's where I should remain.

    1. We past and future dwellers wear ourselves out with our regrets and striving. May the God of all peace dwell within us.

  5. This is so good, Elizabeth! A good friend has shown me how to live in the moment, enjoy the present, savor what's right in front of me. But, ah ... my natural bent? To keep looking ahead to Plan A, B, C!
