Job at Home/Job at the Office?

My main reason for adopting literature as a profession was that, as the author is never seen by his clients, he need not dress respectably.
George Bernard Shaw

Isn't Shaw's quote great? For some worker bees, the best job in the world is one they can do from their very own home. Night owl, early riser, work in your bed, work at a desk, work from the park,  be your own boss, choose your clients, no commute, wear your pajamas or dress professionally - these might all be possibilities if you work from home.

Of course, if you work from home, so much depends on whether you are self-employed or work for someone else, not to mention probably another 100 variables.

Self-employment or telecommuting isn't everyone's dream, though. Some people enjoy the presence of coworkers. They are energized and stimulated by the exchange of ideas and enjoy the liveliness of a busy environment. Your achievements are recognized by others, promotions are available, you are not responsible for generating business. These are a few of the advantages of not working from home or being self-employed.

I have done (and am doing) both and there are strong points in favor of either. What do you think, would you rather work at home or away from home? Let's hear about your experiences.

  1. mmm ... got the best of both worlds these days ... counseling at the office 2 days a week, writing at home with occasional work over the phone the rest of the week.

    this works for me!

  2. I just began working full time after being home for a couple of years. I miss being home so much! I'm trying to figure out if I can have my cake and eat it too.

Thank you for following me and for your comments. I am your newest follower too.

  3. I enjoy working at home now. I did the 9-5 in the office thing, and hope I never have to go back. Coworkers can be nice. I managed to find some through the local writers group. We get together once a month or more to chat and have lunch.

  4. I wish I worked form home. But writing is something I have to find time for, and it's not always easy. Luckily, the office schedule is flexible.
Great quote indeed, and what a cool idea for the "J" post.
